TODAY’S GAME: Down 2-1 in the series, the Generals tonight play game 4 of the 5-game set against the Birmingham Barons (CHW) tonight at Regions Park. This is the lone visit Jackson pays to Birmingham. The Generals took 4 of 5 from the Barons, April 5-9 at Pringles Park to open the 2012 season.
GENERALS RECAP: Birmingham’s Spencer Arrojo tossed a career high 8.1 innings on Tuesday as Birmingham knocked off the Generals 4-1 at Regions Park. The Barons broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the 4th inning by scoring 3 runs with 2 outs. 8th place hitter, Jake Oester drove in 2 runs with a double and Greg Paiml singled in Oester to make it 3-0 Barons. Birmingham scored again in the 7th inning by taking advantage of the 2nd Generals error of the game. The Barons took a 4-0 advantage. The Generals finally dented the scoreboard in the 9th inning, making the score 4-1 on a double from Denny Almonte that scored Francisco Martinez from first. Jackson starter Taijuan Walker suffered the loss despite his second straight quality start. Walker allowed 3 runs on 7 hits over 6.0 innings pitched. Walker walked 1 and fanned 3. Kohlscheen made his Double-A debut giving up an unearned run on 2 hits, walking 1 and striking out 1. Moises Hernandez tossed a perfect eighth inning. No General collected a multi-hit game Tuesday.
MARINERS ACTIVE AT DEADLINE: Seattle acquired outfielder Leon Landry and right-handed pitcher Logan Bawcom (bah-cuhm), who joins Jackson today from the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for right-handed pitcher Brandon League. Also the M’s acquired outfielder Eric Thames from the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for right-handed relief pitcher and former General Steve Delabar.
CAPPS ACTIVATED BY MARINERS: RHP Carter Capps (pictured right, John Shadrick) was promoted to Seattle yesterday after just 1 appearance with AAA Tacoma. . In 38 appearances with AA Jackson he went 2-3 with a Southern League-leading 19 saves and a 1.26 ERA (7 ER, 50.0 IP). The 6-5, 220-pound right-hander struck out 72 batters for a 12.96 K/9.0 IP ratio, and held opponents to a .212 (40×189) batting average. When he makes his Major League debut, Capps will become just the second player from the 2011 MLB draft to appear in a Major League game (Trevor Bauer, Arizona, 3rd overall).
MEET THE NEW CLOSER: RH Yoervis Medina has allowed 1 run in his last 31.1 innings in relief (0.29 ERA). During this 19 game stretch has limited opponents to a .206 (22×107) average, while walking 12 and striking out 29. He is 2×2 in save chances since Capps left Friday.
