TODAY’S GAME: The Generals and Smokies meet for the 22nd time this season tonight in game 3 of the 5-game series that is tied 1-1. The Generals lead the season series, 14-7. Jackson trails the 1st place Chattanooga Lookouts by 1 1/2 games in the SL North second half standings.

GENERALS RECAP: The Generals split a double-header with Tennessee on Saturday night, dropping game one 6-5 and winning game two 8-7. In his 2nd start since coming off the DL, Matt Fox (4.0,5,3,3,1,0) allowed 3 runs on 5 hits in 4.0 innings, but didn’t figure into the decision. LH Jose Jimenez (3.0,3,3,2,1,2,HR) recorded the loss, allowing 3 runs (2 ER) on 3 hits in 3.0 innings in relief. 2B Stefen Romero (2×4, 3B, RBI) recorded the Generals only multi-hit game, going 2×4, with a RBI triple. DH Joe Dunigan (1×4, R, HR, RBI) hit his league-leading 22nd home run of the season with a lead off homer in the 6th, while CF Denny Almonte hit his 10th home run with a solo shot in the 4th inning. In game 2, Forrest Snow (2.0,2,4,4,3,3)earned his 2nd win with the Generals, allowing 4 runs on 2 hits in 2.0 innings in relief. RH Yoervis Medina (0.1,1,0,0,0,1) allowed 1 hits before striking out a batter to record the final out of the game and pick up his 3rd save. LH Mauricio Robles (2.2,3,1,1,3,1) made his first start since joining the Generals, allowed 1 run on 3 hits in 2.2 innings, but didn’t figure into the decision. 2B Stefen Romero (2×3, 2 R, HR, RBI, BB), C Jesus Sucre (2×4, R, RBI) and 3B Leury Bonilla (2×3, R, RBI, RBI) each recorded 2 of the Generals 9 hits.

FOR STARTERS: Today’s starter RH Brandon Maurer (pictured right) ranks 4th in the Southern League with a 3.34 ERA. He also leads the Generals in wins (8), strikeouts (103) and innings pitched (121.1). In 5 starts in July, Maurer is 3-0, with a 1.99 ERA (7 ER, 31.2 IP). Since June 1 he is 6-1 with a 2.57 ERA (20 ER, 70.0 IP) in 11 starts. During this stretch has lowered his season ERA from 4.38 to 3.34.

FUNKY COLD MEDINA: RH Yoervis Medina has allowed 1 run in his last 33.2 innings in relief (0.27 ERA). During this 21 game stretch has limited opponents to a .200 (23×115) average, while walking 12 and striking out 35.

“KISS IT GOODBYE”: Over the course of the last 20 games, the Generals have hit 21 home runs, including 7 multi-homer games. The Generals lead the league with 89 homers this season.

MILLER TIME: SS Brad Miller has hit safely in 9 of 11 games since his promotion to Jackson, batting .341 (14×41) with 7 runs scored, 1 double, 2 home runs and 3 RBI. He currently leads all Mariners farmhands with 48 multi-hit games this season, batting a combined .339 (153×451) with 96 runs scored, 34 doubles, 5 triples, 13 home runs and 59 RBI. His 153 hits are currently 2nd-most in the Minor Leagues this season, while 96 runs scored rank T3rd. In 8 starts since being promoted for High Desert to Jackson.

FROM PRINGLES PARK TO YANKEE STADIUM: RH Carter Capps made his MLB debut for the Mariners on Friday night at Yankee Stadium (0.1 IP (H, BB, sac bunt)…both runners he left scored). With MLB debut became 2nd player from 2011 draft to play in MLB (Bauer).

BEING HEALTHY MATTERS: LH James Paxton is 3-0 with a 1.95 ERA (7 ER, 32.1 IP). He has limited opponents to a .269 (32×119) average, while walking 9 and striking out 32.

BEST IN THE SOUTHERN LEAGUE: The Generals 64 wins are the most in the Southern League. Jackson leads the league in ERA (3.23). The Generals position players also lead the league in total bases (1486), slugging percentage (.402) and home runs (89).

RECORD SETTING PACE: The Generals 64 wins is the fastest to that mark since 2005. The Generals are 6 games off the pace off of the 2005 Diamond Jaxx that won 83 games and 7 off the pace of the 1999 Diamond Jaxx that won a record 84 games.

VIVA LA ROMERO: INF Stefen Romero has hit safely 28 of 35 games (w/AB) with 17 multi-hit games with Jackson since his promotion, batting .328 (46×135) with 22 runs scored, 12 doubles, 3 triple, 6 home runs and 34 RBI.

FERNANDEZ MANIA RETURNS: In 8 starts since being promoted for High Desert to Jackson, Anthony Fernandez is 4-1 with a 2.73 ERA (16 ER, 52.2 IP).

MARINERS FUTURE IN JACKSON: With the addition of Brad Miller, the Generals roster currently contains 11 of the top 30 prospects in the Seattle Mariners organization, according to Baseball America, including 3 of the top 6.
