TODAY’S GAME: Tonight the Generals open a 6-game series in 5 days against the Mississippi Braves (ATL) at Pringles Park. with a double-header Jackson leads the season series over the M-Braves 7-3 and the all-time series, 77-76. The Generals trail Chattanooga by  1 1/2 games in the SL North second half standings. Including tonight’s games the Generals have 21 games remaining, 11 at home and 10 on the road.

GENERALS RECAP: The Generals jumped out to a 2-0 lead on Sunday, but Montgomery scored 5 unanswered and beat Jackson 5-2. The Biscuits took 4 of 5 from Jackson and end the season series winning 12 of the 21 meetings. Rich Poythress delivered a bases loaded single that scored Francisco Martinez and Brad Miller in the top of the 1st inning and Jackson quickly jumped out to a 2-0 edge. Montgomery cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the 2nd inning with a run scoring an a sacrifice fly by Brett Nomensen. Mike Mahtook capped off a 3-run bottom of the fifth inning for Montgomery with a 2-run homer to left against Taijuan Walker. Montgomery scored another in the sixth inning and pushed the lead to 5-2. Jackson starter Walker (7-7) suffered the loss allowing 5 runs on a season-high 12 hits, walking one and striking out 5. Mauricio Robles and Jandy Sena combined to pitch 2.1 scoreless innings behind Walker. Stefen Romero was 3-for-4 to lead the way for Jackson, earning his 20th multi-hit game in 41 Double-A games. The Generals picked up 9 hits in a losing effort and each Jackson starter reached base safely.

FOR STARTERS: Game one starter, LH James Paxton is 4-0 with a 2.60 ERA (11 ER, 38.0 IP). He has limited opponents to a .259 (36×139) average, while walking 12 and striking out 37. Game two starter LH Anthony Fernandez is 0-0, with a 1.50 ERA (2 ER, 12.0 IP) during 2 starts in August. He is holding opponents to a .132 average this month.

ZUNINO PROMOTED TO JACKSON: Monday, the Mariners promoted 2012 #3 overall pick Mike Zunino (pictured right, Shari Sommerfield) to Jackson from Short-A Everett. Zunino was batting .373 with 10 home runs and 32 RBI and a .74 on-base percentage in 29 games since signing on July 3rd. Zunino was the 2012 Golden Spikes Award Winner and National Player of the Year in college baseball out of Florida. He was also the Johnny Bench award winner given to the nations top catcher. C Ralph Henriquez was released from his minor league contract to make room for Zunino.

OF NOTE: INF Rich Poythress has reached base safely in 15 of his last 16 games, batting .327 (17×52) with 8 runs scored, 2 doubles, 2 home runs, 8 RBI and 15 walks.

BEST IN THE SOUTHERN LEAGUE: The Generals lead the league in ERA (3.28). The Generals position players also lead the league in total bases (1595), slugging percentage (.402) and home runs (96).

RECORD SETTING PACE: The Generals 68 wins is the fastest to that mark since 2005. The Generals are 4 games off the pace off of the 2005 Diamond Jaxx that won 83 games and 5 off the pace of the 1999 Diamond Jaxx that won a record 84 games. Last season the Generals won just 68 games and the most won since becoming at Mariners affiliate in 2006 was 75 that season.

#VIVALAROMERO: INF Stefen Romero has hit safely 34 of 41 games (w/AB) with 19 multi-hit games with Jackson since his promotion, batting .346 (55×159) with 27 runs scored, 12 doubles, 3 triple, 9 home runs and 39 RBI. Romero has hit safely in each of his last 8 games, batting .419 (13×31) with 7 runs scored, 4 home runs and 7 RBI.

FUNKY COLD MEDINA: RH Yoervis Medina has allowed 3 runs in his last 36.1 innings in relief (0.74 ERA). During this 24 game stretch has limited opponents to a .200 (25×125) average, while walking 13 and striking out 36.

“KISS IT GOODBYE”: Over the course of the last 27 games, the Generals have hit 28 home runs, including 9 multi-homer games. The Generals lead the league with 96 homers this season. Mobile and Jacksonville are tied for 2nd with 87 long balls.

MILLER TIME: SS Brad Miller has hit safely in 15 of 19 games since his promotion to Jackson, batting .301 (22×73) with 11 runs scored, 2 doubles, 3 home runs and 7 RBI. He currently leads all Mariners farmhands with 50 multihit games this season, batting a combined .336 (160×476) with 99 runs scored, 35 doubles, 5 triples, 14 home runs and 63 RBI. His 160 hits are currently 2nd-most in the Minor Leagues this season, while 99 runs scored rank 4th.
