TODAY’S GAME: The Generals wrap up their 10-game, 2-city road trip this afternoon with the rubber match of the 5-game series against the Chattanooga Lookouts at AT&T Field. Jackson is in the midst of playing 16 games in 15 days (8-7). On the road trip to Mobile (2-3) and Chattanooga (2-2) the Generals are 4-5. The Generals are 3 games back of Chattanooga in the SL North second half standings with 6 games remaining in the regular season.
GENERALS RECAP: – Jackson was limited to just 4 hits on Monday, falling to the Lookouts at AT&T Field, 6-1. The Generals struck first for their only run on Monday night in the top of the 2nd inning. With the bases loaded Rich Poythress scored on a double play hit into by Johermyn Chavez, making the score 1-0. Chattanooga rallied with 2 outs in the 3rd and after a walk to Jan Vasquez; he scored on hit by leadoff man Rafael Ynoa to tie the game at 1-1. The Lookouts big inning was the 4th inning scoring 3 runs against starter Anthony Fernandez. Chattanooga scored on a bases loaded walk by C.J. Retherford, RBI ground out from Nick Buss and home run from Jake Lemmerman. Chattanooga took a 4-1 edge. The Lookouts went on to score a run in the 5th and 7th winning game 4 of the series, 6-1. Jackson starter Anthony Fernandez (4-3) suffered the loss giving up 4 runs on 4 hits in 4.0 innings of work. Fernandez walked 3 and struck out 2. Steve Garrison pitched the final 4.0 innings for Jackson and allowed 2 runs on 6 hits, striking out 3 and walking 2. Lookouts starter and Dodgers top prospect Zach Lee (4-3) earned the win giving up just a run on 3 hits over 6.0 innings. Chattanooga relievers Rubby De La Rosa, Paco Rodriguez and Stephen Ames blanked Jackson over the final 3.0 frames.
TOPS IN THE SOUTHERN LEAGUE: The Generals lead the league in wins (76), batting average (.262), home runs (109), slugging percentage (.403), total bases (1793) and ERA (3.33)
3RD-BEST SEASON IN FRANCHISE HISTORY: The Generals 76 wins is the 3rd-most in franchise history and most since 2005. The 2005 Diamond Jaxx won 83 games and the 1999 Diamond Jaxx won a record 84 games. Last season the Generals won just 68 games and the most won since becoming at Mariners affiliate in 2006 was 75 that season.
GATOR CHOMP: Mariners 2012 1st rounder out of Florida, C Mike Zunino has hit safely in 8 of 10 games with Jackson, batting .389 (12×36) with 6 runs scored, 4 doubles, 3 home runs, 5 RBI and 4 walks.
VIRAL VIDEO: During the August 15th perfect game pitched by Felix Hernandez in Seattle, a video of the Generals reaction during batting practice has gone viral. The video featuring Felix’s brother Moises has been aired on MLB.com, MLB Network, ESPN Sports Center and Yahoo Sports today. As of 2:45 this afternoon it had 97,754 views on YouTube.
VIVA LA ROMERO: INF Stefen Romero has hit safely 42 of 50 games with 21 multi-hit games with Jackson since his promotion, batting .332 (65×196) with 35 runs scored, 14 doubles, 4 triples, 10 home runs and 42 RBI. Romero has hit safely in 10 of his last 11 games, batting .340 (16×47) with 7 runs scored, 4 doubles, 1 triple, 1 home run and 8 RBI.
MAURER POWER: RH Brandon Maurer has been shut down for the season, but ranks 4th in the Southern League with a 3.20 ERA. He also leads the Generals in wins (9), strikeouts (117) and innings pitched (137.1). Since June 1 he is 7-1 with a 2.50 ERA (24 ER, 86.1 IP) with 10 qualitiy starts in 14 starts. During this stretch has lowered his season ERA from 4.38 to 3.20. In 8 starts since returning from DL on July 3,
“KISS IT GOODBYE”: Over the course of the last 42 games, the Generals have hit 41 home runs, including 12 multi-homer games. The Generals lead the league with 109 homers this season. Jacksonville is 2nd in the league with 101 home runs.
MILLER TIME: SS Brad Miller has hit safely in 10 of his last 11 games, batting .381 (16×42) with 2 runs scored, 3 doubles, and 4 RBI. He has also hit safely in 26 of 33 games since his promotion to Jackson, batting .320 (40×124) with 14 runs scored, 5 doubles, 3 home runs and 11 RBI.
