Jackson and Huntsville meet 20 times this season with 10 games to be played in each city. 20-year-old righty Taijuan Walker makes his seventh start of the season tonight. GENERALS RECAP: Runs were tough to come by on Tuesday night in Huntsville, as the Stars got the lone tally in the third inning on a wild pitch. Both starters made it through six innings, but Huntsville (12-20) was able to overtake the Generals (13-17) in the second game of the series as they inched closer towards third place in the Southern League North Division.RHP Chance Ruffin (1-1, 2.80) allowed a leadoff single in the third to Shawn Zarraga, balked to put him on second, and after a sacrifice bunt put the Stars’ catcher on third, Ruffin delivered a wild pitch that allowed Zarraga to score the only run of the ballgame. The Generals’ right-hander surrendered only three hits while striking out four and walking one. Ruffin’s counterpart was even better though. Ariel Pena (2-2, 3.48) lowered his ERA by nearly a run as the Generals’ only mustarded five hits in 6.0 shutout innings.

PROSCIA’S SEASON-LONG STREAK ENDS: INF Steven Proscia saw his 10 game hitting streak come to an end last night. TODAY’S GAME: The Generals (12-16) will open a 5-game series today at Huntsville (11-19). Jackson will play Huntsville 20 times during the 2013 season. Last year the Generals were 11-8 against the Stars. 24-year-old Roenis Elias makes his sixth start for the Generals. This is his 40th overall start in his pro career. Jackson is 1-4 in his starts this season despite the 2.93 ERA in those games.

SCOUTING HUNTSVILLE’S STARTING PITCHER: Jimmy Nelson – Drafted out of Alabama by the Brewers in the first round in 2010. Notched a 3.71 ERA in 26.2 innings of rookie-ball experience that season. Made 25 starts and one relief appearance for Low-A Wisconsin in 2011 with a 4.38 ERA and nearly a 2:1 strikeout to walk ratio. Started the 2012 season with a 2.21 ERA in 13 High-A starts, striking out nearly a batter per inning over 81.1 innings. Promoted to Double-A and has posted a 4.62 ERA in 39 innings with 35 walks and 37 strikeouts.
Big, intimidating guy. Looks the part of a workhorse starter. Two potential plus pitches that can miss enough bats and induce ground balls. Has to gain consistency with delivery. CH doesn’t project to gain much ground. Will throw strikes but won’t locate consistently long term. Mixes pitches well and doesn’t get rattled easily. Nice arm. Durable body. Inning-eater type. Potential number four starter with peak seasons in number three territory.

YOU ALREADY KNOW…that Jackson played their 16th one-run game of the season on Saturday against Jacksonville. But, DID YOU KNOW?…that the 16 one-run games is tied with AAA Gwinnett (Braves) for the most in minor league baseball this season.

Gabriel Noriega (Adam Brimer)

HITTING FOR THE CYCLE: Abraham Almonte (4×5, 2 R, 2B, 3B, HR, 4 RBI) completed the cycle on Saturday night at Chattanooga. It was the first cycle in Jackson franchise history, dating back to 1998, when the Generals were known as the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx. But it was the 2nd cycle in 10 days for a Mariners prospect after Carlos Triunfel accomplished the feat for Triple-A Tacoma on April 17. Almonte hit a solo homer in in the third inning, a bases-loaded triple in the 4th inning, and singled in the 5th and got his 4th RBI of the evening. After being called out on strikes in the 6th inning, Almonte lined a 2-2 pitch to right field for a double to complete the cycle.

TOPS IN THE LEAGUE PITCHING: The Generals pitching staff currently leads the league in ERA (2.90), starters ERA (2.30), hits allowed (174), runs allowed (83) and strikeouts (201).

HOW MANY ONE-RUN GAMES?: So far this season, 15 of the Generals first 25 games have been decided by one run. Jackson is 5-10 in those games. Jackson is also 2-3 in extra-inning games.

My interview today is with Jackson outfielder Abe Almonte who hit for the first cycle in franchise history on Saturday night in Chattanooga. He said this was one of his first English interviews, but he did a really good job. Listen to the full audio below.

Also, re-live the moment when Almonte hit the double in the top of the ninth inning.
