TODAY’S GAME: The Generals look to try and even the series with Montgomery today in game 2 of the set. Jackson is currently on a 6-game, 2-city road trip in Mississippi (2-1) and Montgomery (0-1). The season series with MTG is tied 4-4. Jackson leads the overall series, 66-64.

GENERALS RECAP: The Generals dropped their 2nd straight Saturday in the opener in Montgomery, 7-2 to the Biscuits. Jackson is now 2-2 on the current two-city, six-game road trip. Montgomery started their scoring in the 1st inning with a Hak-Ju Lee triple and he scored on a SAC fly from Ty Morrison. Jackson tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the 2nd on a double by DH Joe Dunigan that scored 1B Rich Poythress. The RBI was Dunigan’s 41st on his team-leading 16th double. Brett Nommensen brought in 2 runs with a double for Montgomery in the 2nd inning placing the Biscuits on top 3-1. 2B Stefen Romero upped his hitting streak to eight games in the 3rd with a 2-out RBI single to left that scored SS Gabriel Noriega, trimming the lead to 3-2. From then on out it was all Biscuits. The Rays Double-A club scored single runs in the 3rd 5th, 7th and 8th to go on for the 7-2 win. Jackson starter Forrest Snow (1-3) tossed 4.2 innings, allowing 5 runs (4 earned) on 3 hits. Snow walked 5 and struck out 3. The Generals pounded out 9 hits and were led by Noriega, who finished 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and run.

THE FUTURE IS NOW: Generals Manager Jim Pankovits was selected as a coach for the U.S. All-Star team and will coach along side manager George Brett. RHP Taijuan Walker was selected to play for the U.S. squad in the 14th annual SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game to be played today at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City (4 p.m. CT/ESPN2, MLB Network Radio) as part of All-Star weekend.

He ranks as the 8th best left-handed pitching prospect and 77th overall prospect in baseball, according to MLB.com.

FERNANDEZ MANIA: Thursday’s starter LH Anthony Fernandez became the first Jackson pitcher in franchise history to post back-to-back 9-inning complete games in his first 2 starts. Fernandez has allowed just 3 ER in 25.0 IP in his first 3 starts in Double-A, including a 2-hit, complete game shutout on June 28th at Pensacola. Fernandez is 3-0, with a 1.08 ERA.

GENERALS RECAP: RH Carter Capps (0.1,3,2,2,1,1) allowed 2 runs in the bottom of the 12th innings as Mississippi walked-off with a 3-2 win over Jackson on Friday night. It was the first earned run Capps had allowed since May 3, a string of 28.0 consecutive innings. In the top of the 12th inning, 2B Stefen Romero scored from 3rd when got picked off at first base to take a 2-1 lead. Romero (1×4, 2 R, HR, RBI) hit his 3rd home run with Jackson with 2 outs in the 1st inning to give the Generals an early 1-0 lead. GENERALS RECAP: The Generals took their 2nd straight from the M-Braves at Trustmark Park, Thursday 11-4. Jackson pounded out 13 hits including eight extra-base hits in the victory. The win secured Jackson’s 2nd straight series win and 13th of the season. The Generals are a season-best 17-games above .500, 51-34 on the season. RH Taijuan Walker (5-4) earned his first win since May 27th, tossing 5.0 innings, allowing 3 runs on 5 hits, walking 2 and striking out 4. RH Taylor Stanton pitched the final 2.0 innings for Jackson upping his scoreless streak to 11.0 innings pitched.  Joe Dunigan, Stefen Romero, Johermyn Chavez and Leury Bonilla each collected two hits Thursday and Chih-Hsien Chiang led the way with three knocks. Every Generals starter had at least a hit or a run scored in the game.

GENERALS RECAP: The Generals picked up their 50th win of the season on Independence Day at Trustmark Park, 4-2. LH Anthony Fernandez outdueled 4-time NL All-Star Ben Sheets and earned his 3rd win in three starts for Jackson. The Generals got to Sheets early Wednesday by scoring 4 runs in the first 2 innings. 2B Stefen Romero picked up an RBI triple followed by a RF Kalian Sams RBI single giving Jackson a 2-0 after the 1st inning. In the 2nd inning, Romero struck again with a two out 2-run double off the center field wall plating 1B Chris Pettit and 3B Leury Bonilla.  Fernandez followed back-to-back complete games with 7.0 innings on Wednesday, allowing 2 runs on 7 hits, striking out 4 and walking just 1. Sheets, making his first pro start since July 19, 2009, allowed 4 runs on 5 hits over 5.0 innings pitched, striking out 6 and walking 1. Sheets retired the final 10 batters faced. RH Carter Capps earned his 14th save of the season with 1.1 scoreless innings. It was the 9th time Capps has gone more than 1 inning for the save. TODAY’S GAME: The Generals begin a 2-city, 6-game road trip tonight against the Mississippi Braves in, Pearl, MS. This is the Generals lone trip at the M-Braves. This season the Generals are 3-2 against the Braves, but they lead the all-time series 75-73

GENERALS RECAP: The Generals dropped the final game of the short three-game series to the Biscuits, 6-1. The game was played in front of a sellout crowd of 6,000 fans, which was the 1st Pringles Park sellout since July 3, 2009. Despite the loss, the Generals won the series, taking 2 of 3 from Montgomery. Jackson’s lone run came in the 3rd inning thanks in part to a Biscuits error. 3B Leury Bonilla reached base on a throwing error and scored on a sacrifice fly by DH Nate Tenbrink. Montgomery scored all but one of their runs in the 6th inning. It started with a line drive single to left by Mark Thomas. Hak-Ju Lee singled on a bunt, advancing Thomas to second base. Both Biscuits scored on a double by Omar Luna. LHP James Paxton made his first start since May 25th, tossing 4.0 scoreless innings. Paxton allowed 2 hits and struck out 2 while surrendering no walks. RH Moises Hernandez(4-1, 5.19) took the loss after allowing five earned runs on six hits.

GENERALS FACE BEN SHEETS TONIGHT: 4-time NL All-Star Ben Sheets was signed to a minor league contract by the Atlanta Braves on Sunday, July 1 and assigned to Double-A Mississippi. The righty makes his first start with the M-Braves tonight against the Generals at Trustmark Park. Sheets, 33, has posted a career record of 90-92 with a 3.79 ERA over the course of nine seasons in the big leagues (8 w/ MIL).

GENERALS RECAP: The Generals won their 2nd straight over Montgomery Monday 2-1, taking the series. Jackson did all of its offensive damage in the first two innings of the game. C Jesus Sucre started things off with a 2-out double, scoring 2B Stefen Romero from first base. In the 2nd inning, Romero drove in RF Johermyn Chavez for his 13th RBI of the season. DH Kalian Sams was 2-for-3, including a triple in the third inning. RH Forrest Snow earned his first Jackson win, tossing 6 quality innings for Jackson. Snow allowed 5 hits and 1 earned run while striking out 4. Reliever Mauricio Robles earned his 5th hold of the season after 1.2 innings of work. RH Carter Capps pitched the last 1.1 innings of the game, striking out two and gaining his 13th save of the year. Capps has not allowed an earned run since April 29th.

K-PAX IS BACK: After missing more than a month with a knee injury LHP James Paxton returned to the Generals roster Tuesday from the disabled list. Paxton. Paxton ranks as the 4th best prospect in the Mariners organization, according to Baseball America. He ranks as the 8th best left-handed pitching prospect and 77th overall prospect in baseball, according to MLB.com.

GENERALS TO FACE BEN SHEETS: Four-time NL All-Star Ben Sheets was signed to a minor league contract by the Atlanta Braves on Sunday, July 1 and assigned to Double-A Mississippi. The right-handed pitcher is expected to make his first start with the M-Braves Wednesday against the Generals at Trustmark Park. Sheets, 33, has posted a career record of 90-92 with a 3.79 ERA over the course of nine seasons in the big leagues (eight with the Milwaukee Brewers).

FERNANDEZ MANIA: LH Anthony Fernandez became the first Jackson pitcher in franchise history to post back-to-back 9-inning complete games. Fernandez has allowed just 1 ER in 18.0 IP in his first two starts in Double-A, including a 2-hit, complete game shutout on Thursday night in Pensacola. Fernandez is 2-0, with a 0.50 ERA.

GENERALS RECAP: The Generals snapped a short 2-game losing streak Sunday with a 7-2 victory for the Montgomery Biscuits.Jackson got on the board in the first inning when CF Denny Almonte (3×4, RBI) came home after DH Chih-Hsien Chiang grounded into a double play. The Generals expanded their lead to 2-0 in the second inning on a balk by Montgomery starter Alex Colome. In the fifth inning, SS Gabriel Noriega scored on a double by Almonte (11). 2B Stefen Romero (2×4, RBI) doubled in Almonte with one out in the inning. Romero later crossed the plate on a wild pitch by Colome, making the score 5-0. 1B Chris Pettit blasted his 4th homer of the year in the sixth inning, scoring LF Joe Dunigan and making the lead 7-0. RHP Taylor Stanton (3-2, 5.84) tossed 5 shutout innings, allowing only 2 hits and striking out 2 in the win.

SUN-DAY OF TRANSACTIONS: Yesterday, LHP Steve Garrison was been promoted to Triple-A Tacoma, INF Rich Poythress and OF Johermyn Chavez were activated from the DL and rehab assignment with the AZL Mariners. TODAY’S GAME: The Generals look to stop a 2-game losing skid tonight in game one of a 3-game series at Pringles Park against Montgomery. This will be the first meeting between the two teams at Pringles Park this season. Montgomery won 3 of 5, May 23-27 at Riverwalk Stadium.

GENERALS RECAP: The Jackson Generals blasted two homers on Saturday, but it was not enough as Pensacola won 4-2 in the series finale, taking the series. Despite dropping their second straight and losing the series, 3-2,Jackson took the season series over the Blue Wahoos, 8-7. Generals starter Taijuan Walker (4-4) took the loss on Saturday allowing 3 runs on 6 hits over 5.0 innings pitched. Walker walked 3 and struck out 3. Relievers Jandy Sena, Mauricio Robles and Carter Capps combined to allow just one unearned run over the final 4.0 innings. Offensively Chih-Hsien Chiang and Kalian Sams added solo homers in the game. Eric Campbell paced the Generals at the plate finishing 2-for-3.

SUNDAY OF TRANSACTIONS: Today, LHP Steve Garrison has been promoted to Triple-A Tacoma and will start today for the Rainiers against Las Vegas. INF Rich Poythress and OF Johermyn Chavez have been activated from the disabled list and their rehab assignment with the AZL Mariners. LHP Jose Jimenez has been activated from A+ High Desert. INF Jharmidy De Jesus has been transferred from Jackson to Low-A Clinton. INF Eric Campbell has been released from his minor league contract.

GARRISON, 25, has been promoted to Triple-A Tacoma and will make the start today for the Rainiers against Las Vegas. Garrison takes the roster spot for Tacoma that was occupied by RHP Steve Delabar who was promoted to Seattle. Garrison was 5-3, with a 3.95 ERA in 12 games, 10 starts this season. In his last 3 starts, Garrison is 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA (4 ER, 20.0 IP) while walking 2 and striking out 12. After recording only one quality start in his first 7 starts, he has recorded one in each of his last 3 starts.

POYTHRESS, 24, was placed on the DL on May 10, with a stress fracture in his left foot. Before the injury, Poythress played in 31 games with Jackson, batting .259, with 1 home run, 10 doubles and 18 RBI. In a rehab assignment with the AZL Mariners, Poythress played in 4 games, batting .545 (6×11) 1 double, 3 home runs and 7 RBI.

CHAVEZ, 23, was placed on the DL on May 8, with a fractured hamate bone in his left hand. Before the injury, Chavez played in 28 games with Jackson, batting .287, with 6 doubles, 3 home runs and 10 RBI. In a rehab assignment with the AZL Mariners, Chavez played in 5 games, batting .438 (7×16) with 4 doubles, 2 home runs and 7 RBI. Chavez hit 2 home runs and had 4 RBI in a rehabilitation start as the Mariners defeated the Royals 10-1 on Thursday night.

JIMENEZ, 25, has been promoted from Class-A High Desert. In 28 games this season with the Mavericks, Jimenez is 1-0, with a 4.78 ERA, in 26.1 innings pitched. Jimenez has struck out 28 and walked 11. The lefty from Bannas, Venezuela was signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Mariners in 2003.

DE JESUS, 22, returns to Low-A Clinton after appearing in 11 games with the Generals. In those games, De Jesus batted .241, with one double, no home runs and no RBI. In Clinton, De Jesus has played in 42 games, batting .216, with 3 home runs and 19 RBI.

CAMPBELL, 25, has been released from his minor league contract. Campbell signed with the Mariners this past offseason and was playing for his third Southern League team in three seasons (Mississipp, 09, Carolina 10). Campbell was batting .245 in 59 games this season as a utility infielder, logging 9 doubles, 5 home runs and 20 RBI. Campbell was originally a 2nd round draft choice of the Atlanta Braves in 2004.

Anthony Fernandez tossed a 2-hit shutout on Thursday

GENERALS RECAP: Lefty Anthony Fernandez tossed a two-hit shutout on Thursday night in Pensacola, as Jackson blanked the Blue Wahoos, 6-0. Fernandez logged his second straight complete game to start his Double-A career, allowing just one run. The 22-year-old righty struck out eight and walked one, facing just three over the minimum. Fernandez got offensive help in the top of the third when 3B Nate Tenbrink blasted his second homer of the series to left, a 2-run shot giving Jackson an early 2-0 advantage. In the fifth, DH Joe Dunigan and C Ralph Henriquez opened the inning with singles. After two strikeouts, LF Chris Pettit delivered an RBI single scoring Dunigan, extending the lead to 3-0. The next batter, 2B Stefen Romero drilled a 3-run homer off the left field foul pole to give Jackson a 6-0 edge. Chris Pettit was 2-for-5 in the game and Ralph Henriquez finished the night 2-for-4 to lead the Generals offensively.
