TODAY’S GAME: The Generals begin a 5-game series today on the road against the Birmingham Barons (CHW). This is the lone visit Jackson pays to Regions Park. The Generals took 4 of 5 from the Barons, April 5-9 at Pringles Park to open the 2012 season.

GENERALS RECAP: Anthony Fernandez allowed 2 runs on 4 hits in the 1st inning, but surrendered just 3 hits over the next 6 innings. The effort wasn’t enough on Saturday as Montgomery won the rubber match in 10 innings, 3-2. The loss dropped the Generals to 3-8 in extra inning affairs this season.
Jackson trimmed a 2-0 deficit  to 2-1 in the 3rd inning when Nate Tenbrink scored on an error by Mahtook, the Biscuits right fielder. The Generals tied the game at 2-2 in the sixth inning on an RBI groundout from Ralph Henriquez. The game went to extra innings tied at 2-2 and in the top of the 10th inning Mahtook delivered a sacrifice fly to right scoring Shawn O’Malley giving the Biscuits a 3-2 edge. Jackson starter Fernandez came away with a no decision despite allowing just 2 runs on 7 hits over 7.0 innings. Fernandez struck out 7 and walked none. Jandy Sena (1-2) allowed the winning run in the 10th and suffered the loss. Jackson’s Brad Miller was 2-for-3, reaching base four times and Rich Poythress was 2-for-5, with a run scored.

THREE STRAIGHT QUALITY STARTS: The last 3 nights, Jackson starters have logged quality starts. Taijuan Walker, James Paxton and Anthony Fernandez have combined for 19.0 innings pitched, allowing just 3 runs logging a 1.42 ERA.

RECORD SETTING PACE: The Generals have reached the 61 win mark the fastest this season since 2005. The Generals are 4 games off the pace off of the 2005 Diamond Jaxx that won 83 games and 5 of the pace of the 1999 Diamond Jaxx that won a record 84 games.

TURN-AROUND FOR TAIJUAN: RH Taijuan Walker is 2-0 with a 0.75 ERA (1 ER, 12.0 IP) over his last 2 starts. During this stretch he has limited opponents to a .167 (7×42) batting average, while walking 2 and striking out 11.

MAURER POWER: RH Brandon Maurer ranks 4th in the Southern League with a 3.51 ERA after posting his 11th quality start Tuesday night. Maurer leads the Generals in wins (7), strikeouts (96) and innings pitched (115.1). In 4 starts in July, Maurer is 2-0, with a 2.45 ERA (7 ER, 25.2 IP) in 4 starts in July. Since June 1 he is 5-1 with a 2.81 ERA (20 ER, 64.0 IP) in 10 starts. During this stretch has lowered his season ERA from 4.38 to 3.51.

“KISS IT GOODBYE”: Over the course of the last 13 games, the Generals have hit 12 home runs, including 4 multi-homer games. The Generals lead the league with 80 homers this season..

BEST IN THE SOUTHERN LEAGUE: The Generals 61 wins are the most in the Southern League. Jackson leads the league in ERA (3.17), while ranking 2nd with a team batting average at .261 (906×3469). WHO’S HOT?: INF Brad Miller currently leads all Mariners farmhands with 47 multi-hit games this season, batting a combined .341 (146×428) with 91 runs scored, 33 doubles, 5 triples, 12 home runs and 58 RBI. His 146 hits are currently T-2nd-most in the Minor Leagues this season, while 91 runs scored rank 3rd and his 33 doubles rank T7th.
-> RH Yoervis Medina has allowed 1 run in his last 29.2 innings in relief (0.31 ERA). During this 18 game stretch has limited opponents to a .206 (21×102) average, while walking 10 and striking out 27.

VIVA LA ROMERO: INF Stefen Romero has hit safely 24 of 30 games with 14 multi-hit games with Jackson since his promotion, batting .336 (39×116) with 18 runs scored, 11 doubles, 2 triple, 4 home runs and 27 RBI.

K-PAX IS BACK: In 5 starts since returning from the DL on July 3, LH James Paxton is 2-0 with a 2.39 ERA (7 ER, 26.1 IP). He has limited opponents to a .278 (27×97) average, while walking 8 and striking out 24.

FERNANDEZ MANIA: LH Anthony Fernandez became the first Jackson pitcher in franchise history to post back-to-back 9-inning complete games in his first 2 starts. In 5 starts since being promoted for High Desert to Jackson, Anthony Fernandez is 4-1 with a 2.89 ERA (15 ER, 46.2 IP).
