GENERALS RECAP:  The Generals tallied 13 hits and scored 10 runs for just the 2nd time this season as Jackson beat Pensacola 10-2 on Friday night. Jackson sent 10 batters to the plate in the top of the 2nd inning and scored 6 runs. DH Joe Dunigan (2×5, 2 R, 2 RBI) and 1B Rich Poythress (2×5, R, 2 RBI) recorded 2-RBI singles while 3B Francisco Martinez (2×6, R, 2B, RBI) and Jesus Sucre drove in single runs with hits. It marked the largest inning of the season for Jackson and put the Generals up 6-0. RF Johermyn Chavez led the team with 3 hits, going 3×5 with 1 run scored and 1 RBI. Starter Brandon Maurer picked up his second win of the season, allowing 1 run on 6 hits in 7.0 innings. LH Bobby LaFromboise tossed a scoreless 9th inning to extend his scoreless inning streak to12.2 innings.

TODAY’S GAME: Tonight the Generals look to even the 5-game series against Pensacola at Maritime Park, with Jackson trailing 2-1. The Generals lead the Southern League North over Huntsville by 2 games with an 18-10 record.

GENERALS RECAP:  Starters James Paxton and Taijuan Walker combined to allow just 2 unearned runs in 11.0 innings in a double-header last night vs. Pensacola. Jackson split the double-header with Pensacola winning game 1, 3-1 and dropping game 2, 1-0. In game 2, the Generals were shutout for just the 1st time during the 2012 season. Despite the split, Jackson still remains 2 games ahead of Huntsville in the North standings. In game one, Paxton recorded his 3rd win allowing 1 run (0 ER) on 3 hits in 5.1 innings and RH Stephen Pryor struck out 4 of the 5 batters he faced to earn his 7th win. 3B Francisco Martinez led the offensive going 2×3 with 2 runs scored. TODAY’S GAME:Tonight the Generals look to snap a two-game losing skid in game two of the five-game set with the Blue Wahoos in Pensacola. This is the first of two trips to Pensacola for the Generals this season.

GENERALS RECAP:  Pensacola’s Cody Puckett singled home Koyie Hill in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Blue Wahoos came-from-behind to beat Jackson 4-5 on Tuesday night. The Generals jumped out to a 4-0 lead with 2 runs scoring in the first on RBI doubles from SS Nick Franklin (1×4, R, 2B, RBI, BB) and 1B Rich Poythress (1×5, RBI). Jackson added a run in the 2nd on an RBI groundout from 2B Gabriel Noriega (0x4, RBI) and a RBI double from LF Chris Pettit (2×5, 2B, RBI) in the 3rd. GENERALS RECAP:  On Sunday, Tennessee’s Jonathan Mota belted a 2-run home run in the top of the 10th inning as the Smokies came-from-behind to beat Jackson 5-3 on Sunday afternoon. The loss ended the Generals winning streak at 6 games. Starter Danny Hultzen allowed 3 runs (1 ER) on 5 hits while walking 1 and striking out 4 in 4.2 innings, but didn’t figure into the decision. He allowed all 3 runs in the 5th inning, ending his scoreless inning streak at 16.0 innings (dating back to 4/19). It was the longest scoreless inning streak by a Generals pitcher this season. RH Carter Capps (1.0,1,2,2,1,1,HR) allowed 2 runs in the 10th inning to record his 2nd loss of the season. CF/RF Johermyn Chavez(2×4, R, HR, RBI, BB) added his 2nd straight multi-hit game going 2×4, while recording home runs in back-to-back games.

WHO’S HOT?: In 5 starts this season, Danny Hultzen is 2-2 with a 2.05 ERA (6 ER, 26.1 IP). He has limited opponents to a .149 average (14×94), which is the lowest in the Southern League, while walking 12 and striking out 30. Of his 14 hits allowed only 3 have gone for extra-bases (2 2B, 3B). After allowing 2 runs in his 2nd relief appearance on April 8,
• Bobby LaFromboise has not allowed a run in his last 11.2 innings. During this stretch he limited opponents to a .158 average (6×38) while walking 2 and striking out 14. LaFromboise has lowered his ERA from 7.71 to 1.29 in his last 6 relief appearances.
• Joe Dunigan has hit in each of his last 5 games, batting .381 (8×21) with 6 runs scored, 3 doubles, 2 home runs and 4 RBI.
• Chris Pettit has hit safely in 6 straight games, batting .348 (8×23) with 3 runs scored, 3 doubles, 1 triple and 3 RBI. LH Brian Moran (11.2), RH Moises Hernandez (9.0) and LH Steve Garrison-DL (4.1) and have yet to allow a run this season.

IN A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN: The Generals pitching staff has struck out a league-best 225 batters so far this season and also lead the league with a 2.42 ERA. The next closest team to Jackson is Jacksonville at 3.39. Taijuan Walker (2nd), Danny Hultzen (5th) and Andrew Carraway (8th) rank in the top 10 in ERA.

First-year Mariners Minor League Director Chris Gwynn is happy with the progress of the 2012 Jackson Generals.

Gwynn was hired by Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik on Nov. 1, 2011. Previously, he was the Director of Player Personnel for the San Diego Padres in 2010 and 2011, capping a 15-year run in the Padres baseball operations department.

Chris, the brother of Hall-of-Famer Tony Gwynn, played in the Major Leagues with the Padres, Dodgers and Royals after being the 10th overall selection of the Dodgers in the 1985 draft out of San Diego State.

Gwynn makes periodic visits to the affiliates throughout the Mariners’ organization checking on progress and player development. Gwynn was in Jackson during the Generals’ previous series with the Tennessee Smokies.

Gwynn has inherited one of the most coveted Minor League systems in baseball, and it has been a challenging process the first few months on the job to learn the personnel.

“I explained it to someone that it was like going 50 MPH down the road and sticking your head out the window,” responded Gwynn with a smile. “It slowed down a little bit in spring training when I got to put the bodies with the names, and at the end of spring training I felt more comfortable. Now, I feel like I know the kids and want to see how they react in game situations.”

The Generals are 17-8 on the season and leading the Southern League North Division by three games. Currently, the 17 wins are the second-most in all of minor league baseball.

“I am happy that (the Generals) are having success. I want to make sure that they keep progressing. Success on the field in terms of wins and losses is a great thing because they learn to close games out, get big hits and make great defensive plays. I want them to keep their heads on straight though,” said Gwynn. “I know that I kind of sound like a dad.”

Gwynn works closely with Mariners General Manager Jack Zduriencik dealing with player personnel. Zduriencik is credited with helping to re-stock the Brewers minor league system through the draft as a member of the front office in Milwaukee before coming to Seattle in 2008. Zduriencik understands the importance of building a franchise from within.

“(Zduriencik) has let me do a lot of the things that I wanted to do when I came in which is making sure the players have a road map as far as getting better,” said Gwynn.

As Minor League Director, Gwynn, along with Zduriencik will make decisions on movement with some of these talented Generals players. Taijuan Walker is 3-0, with the second-best ERA in the Southern League at 1.64. Danny Hultzen has the fifth-best ERA in the league at 2.08 and James Paxton ranks fourth with a team-best 31 strikeouts. Relievers such as Carter Capps, Stephen Pryor, Brian Moran and Moises Hernandez are off to great starts as well.

“We have had nice discussions on why they are here and how they are going to move from here. Those ingredients are to work hard, prepare and try to execute,” Gwynn replied.

This Generals team is not a normal minor league squad with four top 100 prospects in baseball and ranked at the beginning of the season by Baseball America as the most talented minor league club. Gwynn wants to keep these talented young Mariners accountable.

“There are guys here that are coveted, but you want to make sure they get the job done,” Gwynn said. “Each player is on their own timetable. We have a plan and they have done what they are supposed to do so far. Just like I told the guys, you just never know what is going to happen. Just enjoy the time you are together. In baseball moves are always being made.”

Many current Generals are considered to be a big part of the future of the Mariners franchise. Keeping them together and playing for same team as opposed to different levels is important.

“When you can watch someone that has a similar ability to you and see how they go about things; it can only help you,” Gwynn added. “That does not mean that is how you should subscribe to doing things, but at the end of the day the more information you gather the better player you become.”

The Generals are on pace for 97 wins this season, which is a bit premature to even speculate knowing how movement and promotions occur in minor league baseball. I asked Gwynn if it were possible to keep this squad together for the entire season.

“Now that’s above my pay grade,” said Gwynn after a brief laugh. “I can’t promise this roster will be here all year, but what I can promise is that whoever is in Jackson is going to play hard.”

The Generals are traveling to Pensacola today on the first day off of the season. The Generals open a five-game series tomorrow night at Blue Wahoos Park, located right on the coast of Pensacola Bay. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m.

Denny Almonte went 0x4 yesterday ending his hitting streak at 9 games, but has hit safely in 12 of his last 15 games. During the last 15 games he isbatting .414 (24×58) with 8 runs scored, 3 doubles, 6 home runs and 13 RBI. During this stretch he has raised his season average from .179 to .358.
