PREVIEW: Generals at Barons

By: Grant Braden

Scouting Report: Jackson v. Birmingham
Jackson Generals: 27-34, 14-16 on road, 4th place
Birmingham Barons: 41-24, 21-9 at home, 1st place

  • Starting pitching will be key in this series. In the 5/17-5/20 series between these two teams, only two decisions went to a pitcher from the bullpen. Taijuan Walker had his worst start of the season against Birmingham, allowing 7 runs in 4.1 innings of work. Roenis Elias, Chance Ruffin, Nick McCully, Erik Johnson and Spencer Arroyo all went at least 5 innings with only 2 earned runs or less.
  • Speaking of pitching, the bullpen for Jackson was terrific in their last series with Birmingham. They threw 16.1 innings, allowing 16 hits and only three runs. Andrew Kittredge gave up all three of those runs himself. The bullpen struggled a bit in Tennessee against the Smokies, but got their groove back last series against the Lookouts.
  • Who’s HOT and who’s not? Leon Landry is 9-for-25, with 3 runs, 3 stolen bases and a double since coming off the disabled list last week. Denny Almonte is 3-for-28 with 12 strikeouts dating back to the series with the Smokies.
  • As a team, the Barons are top in many offensive categories. They lead the league in batting average (.255), runs (326), walks (283), stolen bases (85) and on base percentage (.349)
  • Dan Black struggled in the first series against Jackson, but as a whole, has put together a terrific season. The first baseman is in the top five of the Southern League in average, on base percentage, RBIs and walks.
  • Who’s Hot? Keenyn Walker is 12-for-35 in his last ten games. He has scored eight times and driven in two. The center fielder has 23 steals, tops in the league.
  • Erik Johnson (7-2, 2.37) has a 1.21 ERA at home this season. Righties are hitting .167 off him. He struck out a season-high 10 batters in seven innings back on April 25 against the Huntsville Stars.
  • Top 10 prospects for the White Sox: No. 2 prospect Trayce Thompson, No. 4 prospect Erik Johnson, No. 5 prospect Keenyn Walker and No. 6 prospect Scott Snodgress
